I'll never claim to be overly familiar with the western genre, and more often than not I don't have a very great appreciation for western film scores. I can say, however, that I absolutely love the opening track on this disc, "The Hour of the Gun." Bright and jazzy, it feels almost like a western crossed with a game show theme. Its theme carries into the "Main Title" which follows, plucked on a guitar string first, then taken up by other instruments amid a general air of tension. The remainder of the score is surprisingly gentle, not as action-driven as you might think. The main theme continues to make appearances throughout, always with different orchestration. I don't listen to this very often, but it's good and it's still recommended.
